This policy explains what the Children's eBooks app ("the App", "we") does with information. The App is a catalogue of free children's eBooks directed to children and families. We use no age screen: every user is treated as a child for advertising purposes, under the strictest advertising settings that Google offers.

We never sell personal information, never build a profile of you or your child, and never show personalized advertising.
The App has no accounts, no analytics and no purchases. It is free and shows an occasional child directed, contextual ad; the technical information those ads need is listed in full below. We share only that technical information with our advertising partners, and only so that they can serve contextual ads.

We are the operator responsible for the App and the data controller in the EU, EEA and UK.

Advertising

The App is free and supported by advertising. It shows an occasional full screen ad, and only at one moment: after you close a book's detail page and return to the shelf or to your search results. An ad is never shown when the App opens, never on the first launch setup, never over a menu or a dialog, never when you come back from a book's page on Amazon, and never on the first three launches after installation. The App also limits ads by frequency: several book pages must have been opened since the previous ad, at least four minutes must have passed, and there are at most two ads per session and four per day. These limits are enforced on the device and use no identifier.

The advertisements are served by third parties, named here, through their software built into the App. We do not sell advertising ourselves and we do not choose individual ads.

Ads are delivered by Google LLC (AdMob) (how Google uses information from apps that use its services), which is a Google Play Families self certified advertising partner.

Some ads may be delivered by Kidoz Ltd. (Kidoz privacy policy), a children's advertising network that serves contextual ads only and is also a Google Play Families self certified partner. Kidoz receives the device's IP address together with the same in app interaction and diagnostic information described below.

Ads are always shown as a separate full screen, clearly marked as an ad. Tapping an ad can open the advertiser's page in the app store or a browser.

What ads mean for your data

Every ad request from this App is tagged as directed to children and capped at content rating "G". As a direct result:

No personalized or interest based advertising. Ads are contextual only.
No remarketing.
No advertising identifier. The App does not request the Android AD_ID permission, and the Android Advertising ID is not collected or transmitted. Neither are SIM Serial, Build Serial, BSSID, MAC, SSID, IMEI or IMSI.
No behavioral profile is built about anyone, by us or by our advertising partners.
No requests to third party ad vendors such as measurement pixels or third party ad servers.

To deliver an ad, our advertising partners receive the following: the device's IP address, which allows an approximate city level location to be inferred and is what the ad is transmitted to; in app interaction events such as an app launch or an ad view; diagnostic information about app and SDK performance; and device identifiers that are not advertising identifiers, such as the App Set ID. This information is used only for delivering and measuring the ad, for aggregated reporting, and for fraud prevention and security. That is what the U.S. Children's Online Privacy Protection Rule calls support for the internal operations of an online service.

These identifiers are not used or disclosed in order to contact any specific individual, to build a profile about any specific individual, for behavioral advertising, or for any other purpose.

Ad requests from this App carry no consent string, and the App explicitly requests Google's "limited ads" serving mode, which does not use cookies or device storage for advertising purposes. The advertising software does store information on the device and read it back, including in the storage of the web view that renders an ad, but only for purposes that Google describes as strictly operational: delivering the ad, capping how often an ad is shown, and detecting invalid or fraudulent ad traffic. We disclose this here because no consent dialog is ever shown in this App. Users may be below the age at which consent can validly be given, so the App states that fact to Google rather than asking a question a child cannot answer.

Information we do not collect

No name, email address, phone number, or postal address
No account or login, the App has none
No precise location data
No contacts, photos, files, camera, or microphone access
No analytics, crash reporting, or usage statistics of our own

What stays on your device

To open quickly and use less mobile data, the App saves a few things in its own private storage on your phone:

The book lists it last downloaded
Your chosen country, categories, and display style
Books you marked as favourites, and books you recently opened
A handful of counters that limit how often an ad may appear, and the flag that tells the advertising software to use limited ads. They contain no identifier.

This information is not sent to us. Uninstalling the App, or clearing its storage in Android Settings, removes all of it permanently.

Book information

The App shows publicly available bestseller listings of free children's eBooks from Amazon. To do that it requests those public lists from our own server. Those requests carry no identifier of you or your device, only which country and category to fetch. Book cover images are loaded directly from Amazon's servers.

When you tap Get it now, the App opens that book's page on Amazon in your browser. From that point Amazon's own privacy policy applies, not ours.

Permissions

The App requests two Android permissions, INTERNET and ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE, which it needs to fetch the book lists, the cover images and an ad. The advertising software built into the App also declares two standard Android permissions, WAKE_LOCK and FOREGROUND_SERVICE, which it uses for its own background work such as finishing the download of an ad. Neither of them gives access to any personal information, and Android does not ask the user to grant them. The App also defines one private permission of its own, generated by Android's support library, which only prevents other apps from sending messages to its internal components and grants nothing. The App does not request the advertising ID permission, camera, microphone, contacts, location, or storage permissions.

Data security

All connections between the App and our server use HTTPS encryption, and so do the connections of the advertising software.

Our server and your IP address

Like every request made over the internet, the request your device sends to our server carries your device's IP address; the server cannot send a reply without it. We do not store it, we do not use it to identify you, and we do not combine it with anything else. Our hosting provider (Vercel) keeps short term operational logs of incoming requests, as any hosting provider does, and we do not read them to identify individual users.

The only thing our server records about usage is which country and category lists are being opened, so that it refreshes the lists people actually read. That record contains no user, device, or session identifier of any kind, and it expires automatically.

Children's privacy under COPPA (United States)

The App is directed to children and families and treats every user as a child. The only information collected in connection with the App is the persistent and technical information listed under "What ads mean for your data", and it is collected only for support for the internal operations of the service: contextual ad delivery, frequency capping, aggregated reporting, and fraud prevention and security. Because no other personal information is collected, and because these identifiers are never used to contact or profile an individual, verifiable parental consent is not required for this collection under 16 C.F.R. section 312.5(c)(7). The means we use to ensure that these identifiers are not used or disclosed to contact a specific individual, including through behavioral advertising, or to amass a profile are: every ad request is tagged as child directed and under the age of consent; the App does not hold the advertising ID permission, so no advertising identifier exists to transmit; the App requests Google's limited ads mode and disables Google's publisher first party identifier; the App keeps no account and no profile; and our partners are bound by their own children's advertising programs (Google Play Families self certification).

Your rights in the EU, EEA and UK

Ad requests are tagged as coming from a user who may be below the age of digital consent, which suppresses any consent form and restricts serving to limited, non personalized ads. IP addresses are processed on the basis of our legitimate interest in delivering the book lists you asked the App to show and in delivering and securing the advertising that funds a free app (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR), balanced by the restrictions described above. We do not process personal data for profiling or automated decision making, and we do not sell personal data.

You have the right to request access to, correction of, erasure of, or restriction of any personal data concerning you; to object to processing; and to data portability. To exercise any of these, write to the address above. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your national data protection authority.

Data retention and deletion

On your device. The information listed under "What stays on your device" is kept until you remove it. You can clear your recently viewed list from inside the App at any time. Uninstalling the App, or clearing its storage in Android Settings, deletes all of it permanently.

On our server. Cached book lists expire automatically within 40 hours. The usage record described above expires within 30 days. Neither contains personal data.

With our advertising partners. Data received by them is retained under their own published retention policies, linked above. A parent or guardian may write to webhym@gmail.com to ask what information relating to their child the App may have caused to be collected, to request its deletion, or to refuse any further collection. We will respond within 30 days; because we hold no data ourselves, a deletion request will be forwarded to the relevant advertising partner. Uninstalling the App stops all ad related collection immediately.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the revised version will be posted at this address with an updated date, before the corresponding App update reaches Google Play. Any change that affects data handling will be reflected in the App's Play Store Data safety section as well.
